After general voting and careful consideration by juries, Grand Prix, 2nd Prize (Excellence Award), Idea Award, Essence Award, and 3 Honorable Judge Award have been decided.

    3D Real-Time Digital Twin System for Heavy Machinery in Dam Construction Work
      By linking a cooperative control system for autonomous construction machines and VR Design Studio UC-win/Road, a real-time 3D monitoring and emergency stop system for approaching construction machines at a dam construction site was constructed. Using GNSS position information, the system visualizes positions of workers and autonomous construction machines in VR Design Studio UC-win/Road, and activates an 'approach detection' when construction machines are approaching. In such case, the system issues a warning to the supervisors of the autonomous construction machines and a 'stop' command to the cooperative control system.

      A dam construction site is represented in a large VR space. Scenarios show an image of monitoring the movement of construction machines and simulating it in VR, as well an image of how the 'approach detection' works.

    Simulation to Experience the Effect of Seismic Isolation Devices
    Contents that allow subjects to experience the effects of seismic isolation devices that reduce damage to buildings during an earthquake were created. Using HMD-based VR and the Motion Seat, subjects can experience the differences in shaking between earthquake-resistant structures, seismically isolated structures, and vibration-controlled structures. Warehouses, condominiums, and office spaces were reproduced, and physical simulations of collapsing and falling fixtures and their sound effects were performed to produce the situation under such conditions.

    Warehouses, condominiums, and office spaces are reproduced and can be viewed from the first person's perspective at will. The scenario shows the shaking in the room with heavy machinery tipping over and falling in an earthquake simulation, and how this can be experienced using the VR Motion Seat.

    Jeollabuk-do Traffic Culture Training Institute

    Driving Ability Evaluation System for Elderly Drivers
    As traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers increase, the voluntary return of driver's licenses is being implemented, but the effect is insignificant. In order to revitalize the driver's license voluntary return system, this system was developed that allows elderly drivers to recognize their driving ability. We selected four areas with many elderly driver traffic accidents and made VR data. The driver made a virtual driving using a driving simulator, and the driving ability evaluation result was automatically output when the driving was finished.

    Watch This

    Roads in areas where accidents frequently occur are reproduced and it is possible to drive on these road by experiencing the driving scenarios. When you run the scenario for explanation, you can see the image of the DS made for driving evaluation, the contents of the evaluation, and the hazardous scenes that are reproduced.

    VR Simulation Reproducing Traffic around Hon Atsugi Station
    The road and roadside scenery on the north side of Hon Atsugi Station were reproduced as a cyberspace in a digital twin used for an examination of transit malls, etc.. Traffic and crowd simulation using VISSIM was conducted to present the traffic and pedestrian flow over a wide area in VR. Future plans include application to various type of research theme, such as visualization of real-time micro data of crowd flow from cameras installed in urban areas.

    Simulation of Traffic in a Factory Premise when Workers are Commuting to and from Work
    This is a VR traffic simulation for a project involving construction of new roads and renovation of a large-scale intersection in a factory premise. Traffic congestion on the road with road geometry that allows large vehicles in operation to have priority, packed with vehicles driven by workers commuting to and from work is verified by VR simulation. As a countermeasure to traffic jam, direction of traffic in particular lanes are reversed between the time when workers are arriving and the time they are leaving, and traffic flow in these lanes are reproduced to examine optimal traffic signal phases. The VR data was used to plan traffic flow within the premises, including setting speed limits by traffic volume and section, and pallet pools for large vehicles in operation.

    Watch This

    An animation shows the differences in traffic flow between the time when workers are arriving and the time they are leaving. It is possible to see lanes and intersections that give priority to special large vehicles in operation, traffic signal phases, and the flow of passenger cars commuting to and from work in the vast factory premises.

    Research of Life Extension Measures For Maintenance Management of Bridges in Mountainous Area
    Prior to the replacement of a bridge in a mountainous area, VR was used for examination. The current structure was modeled based on point clouds to reproduce its current condition, including deteriorated sections and deformation of the entire structure. The view can be switched to the structure after the bridge replacement, where one side of the girder is removed, and a driving simulation is conducted to confirm whether or not there are any obstructions to truck traffic due to the significantly narrower girder.

    Watch This

    By switching the view of landscape, it is possible to see that the bridge structure has changed significantly after the repair work compared to what it was like before. A scenario shows the current conditions represented by point clouds and a truck traffic simulation.

    Vehicle-Bicycle-Pedestrian Coordination Simulator System
    A simulator system that enables vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian simulators to interact with each other using VR Design Studio UC-win/Road's cluster network linkage function. Various biometric devices such as NIRS (for brain activity measurement) and eye trackers can also be linked for interactive operation. Experiment log data can be centrally managed. The system is widely used for research related to autonomous vehicles and mobility.

    By running the scenario, it is possible to see a description of what experiments are being conducted with the DS and how the data is being collected.

    Urban Underground Roads' Traffic Signs and VR Simulation for Safety Assessment
    This is a VR scene of an underground passage in a shopping mall in southern China. The road part is approximately 1 km long, of which the underground roadway accounts for 50%. In this scene, VR is used to simulate the safety of vehicles merging from the road above ground and vehicles entering and exiting the tunnel. Different types of traffic signs are placed in different locations along the underground roadway to provide a reasonable suggestion about the placement of traffic signs. This project is currently in its first phase and will be followed by further studies to improve the effects of scotopic vision and photopic vision on drivers by adjusting the lighting as vehicles enter and exit the tunnel.

    The structure of the junction where the underground roadway and the road above ground come together is reproduced. The scenario includes an overview of the simulation and images of different patterns for road sign placement.

    VR Simulation for Bridge Landscape Design
    Considering the landscape and color characteristics of the target site and the surrounding area of the bridge landscape to be examined, the color and shape of the main pillar, railing, and the sidewalk pavement were compared and verified via 3D VR simulation. The purpose of this project is to contribute to the opening of roads in the future by facilitating discussions with the client.

Different alternatives for the structure of the high railings, lightings, pavement of the footpath, and the shape of the main pillars are compared and presented, and you can even drive over the bridge after verification to confirm the landscape for yourself.

    Promotion of Wind Power Generation Business Using DX Technology (3DVR and PLATEAU) - Towards the realization of Smart Cities in Rural Areas
    In recent years, wind power generation projects for making smart cities are expected to be promoted. However, gaining an understanding of stakeholders and Japan Fishing cooperatives, etc., is necessary to realize smart cities, thus it is important to provide easy-to-understand explanations. On the other hand, effective utilization of the PLATEAU model is required in the midst of DX promotion. Therefore, this work presents a case study of a wind power generation project (onshore and offshore wind power) using DX technologies such as 3D VR and PLATEAU model.

The onshore project introduces the use of the power as a resource for promoting tourism including the surrounding park, the examination on the extent of potential impact by shadow flicker and noise by using the PLATEAU models, and landscape examination such as the impact of color of the wind turbines on the landscape aesthetics. As an example of offshore power generation, the construction methods and the creation of new fishing grounds are represented.

    Simulation of Bridge Superstructure Construction

    This simulation represents the construction sequence at a bridge erection site. It is intended to give subcontractors a sense of the timing of entry into the site in chronological order and to be used for safety education for workers when they enter the site. Although this construction work was delivered in the middle of the project, the final form was created in the simulation so that the client would be able to visually understand the view upon completion.

    When the animation is played, the work flow of erecting the bridge girders is simulated. In particular, bearings and parts related to them are shown in detail, and the simulation also includes the construction sequence after the erection of girders, including the construction of pavement and railings to give the client a clear understanding of the whole construction sequence until completion.

    Construction DX Challenge (Remote Construction Demonstration) Digital Twin System
      In the VR NILIM, which was built on F8VPS, the virtual venue for remote construction demonstration held at the DX experimental field was constructed. The venue layout and heavy equipment were reproduced in the VR space, and images of the site were streamed in real-time at the virtual venue. As an application of the digital twin platform, information from heavy equipment sensors can be acquired to simulate the movement of heavy equipment synchronized with the site in VR.

      The DX experimental field in the VR NILIM has been updated to reproduce a virtual venue for remote construction demonstrations. The layout of the venue and images of heavy equipment can be seen, and videos can be viewed from cameras positioned in the space. Click on the hangar to see the schedule of demonstrations.

    As for the prize online shopping gift card (300,000 yen), Forum8 donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society in an equivalent amount.

Overview of 3D VR Simulation Contest

3D/VR Simulation Contest on Cloud starts with the award winning of VR Design Studio UC-win/Road software in "Software Product of the Year" in 2002. The main event of the FORUM8 design festival is the competition between international and domestic contestants to see who can create the most advanced VR simulation using VR Design Studio UC-win/Road. A general public online vote via VR-Cloud® has also been implemented since 2011.
This year, a new award "VR SYSTEM OF THE YEAR" has been established.

Submission Requirements

UC-win/Road has been used in various fields from civil engineering/construction, to driving/traffic simulations, to even town planning. In a recent years we have noticed a change in an organizations focus to autonomous driving research, disaster prevention scenarios, education, and medical care.
We look forward to your applications for the state-of-the-art VR data and systems that make the most use of UC-win/Road and other FORUM8 solutions and will lead to the realization of smart cities and DX.

    Creation of Disaster Scene Using VR And Display of Flood Simulation Analysis Data
    To improve the effectiveness of disaster prevention drills, VR is employed to help the flood exercise platform of an existing disaster information website to visualize flood simulations. It simulates the damage caused by river flooding based on the 3D terrain models such as Laonong River, Qingshui River, and Baolai River in Taiwan, and the flood warning system developed by the Center. The VR data is open to the public on VR-Cloud with a 360-degree video.

    Soil Transport Planning Using Traffic Simulation Analysis
    In order to formulate an optimal vehicle allocation plan for transporting soil at a construction site, a dump truck operation was simulated based on the amount of earth transported and a survey of the amount of traffic. The actual road and traffic conditions were reproduced in the VR space, and the operation cycle, including loading and tire washing, was verified using the 4D simulation. The data was effective for preliminary discussions, construction planning, and safety measures.

    Simulator for Highway Snow Removal in Echelon Formation
    A training simulator has been developed for the purpose of training snow removal vehicle operators. In order to provide training with a realistic environment similar to that of a real vehicle, the simulator reproduces the road environment of an expressway and can perform necessary diagnoses such as accuracy of vehicle position and distance to the vehicle in front. The three simulators work together to simulate snow removal in the echelon formation, but it is also possible to train for one person by using automatic control of the other vehicles.

    First in Shikoku! "Akamatsu Hybrid Expo" toward New Normal Era
    Shikoku's first live and virtual hybrid exhibition was held. In a virtual venue using F8VPS, visitors could browse documents, watch promotional videos, and view products, mainly office automation equipment and subscription products. A seminar corner by exhibitors, a lottery, and a questionnaire were also included, and a total of more than 1,000 people accessed the exhibition over the two days, making it useful for sales promotion.

    Bus Driving Simulation System for Traffic Safety Promotion
    This system simulates the driving conditions of a bus, and subjects can understand the difference in vision between the driver of a bus (large vehicle) and those of other vehicles and pedestrians by comparing the bus driver's visual angle with an overhead view from outside the vehicle. In addition, subjects can also recognize the blind spots and inside wheel differences of large vehicles, which will help them to avoid dangerous spots in real situations, and will lead to a reduction in traffic accidents.

    VR to Announce Safety Measures on Hanshin Expressway Route 1 Loop Line
    For the Hanshin Expressway Route 1 Loop Line, where many traffic accidents occur due to its complicated merging points and junctions, VR data was created for the new guidance signs and junctions to be installed by the renovation together with the current state. It covers the road from the Minatomachi JCT to the Nakanoshima JCT, and will be used as a public relations tool to inform users the changes and cautionary information such as improved guide signs, lane lines for smoother merging, and pavement coloring, etc.

    VR Simulation Reproducing Kitamaebune in Nikaho City
    The aim of this data is motivating people to visit Nikaho City. The city has many cultural assets related to Kitamaebune, which are recognized as a Japanese Heritage Site. The data recreates the scenes of Kitamaebune ships off the coast of Nikaho City that sailed in the Edo and Meiji periods. Viewers can also experience VR navigation from a viewpoint overlooking Mt. Chokai. For the future, developments of VR sightseeing experience using F8VPS before visiting the city and AR to experience the past collapse of Mt. Chokai are planned.

    National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management, MLIT

    Cutting Edge of Infrastructure DX Research - Virtual NILIM and 4K VR Simulator -
    As part of the infrastructure DX promotion, the entire site of the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM), which measures up to 3 km from north to south, has been reproduced in VR. In addition to reproducing the exteriors of many facilities and test tracks for publicity purposes, a large 4K VR stereoscopic Driving Simulator has been installed as a platform for inter-departmental researches. This VR information is available on F8VPS, where visitors can take a virtual tour of the site and watch videos of experiments.
